New Stamp Issues for Autumn

The Canvey Island Local Post is pleased to announce the release of new stamps this autumn commemorating three major anniversaries in UK history.

N.H.S. 70 Years 1948-2018

The National Health Service was established in 1948 and has changed the lives of generations of Britons. The service continues to offer health care 'from cradle to grave' and although under increasing pressure, remains the flagship institution of social achievement and national pride.

The NHS stamp was released on 31 October, 2018, and features the man behind the NHS, ex-coal miner and Labour government minister Aneurin Bevan. Alongside his profile is a quote from the man himself which remains even more poignant and relevant today.

Women's Suffrage Centenary 1918-2018

The CILP is proud to announce the release of this stamp to salute the struggle of Suffragists and Suffragettes to achieve women's suffrage.

Not only does this stamp commemorate women's struggle in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but also acknowledges the continuing fight to achieve women's rights and equality in the UK and worldwide in the 21st century.

WWI Armistice Centenary 1918-2018

This unique commemoration on the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice recognises the significance of the end of the First World War, and the sacrifice made by so many men and women during the war. The stamp is released on the day of the Armistice Remembrance, 11th November, 2018.

The stamp reflects the solemnity of the event with a stylised, yet traditional red poppy. The legend, "Lest We Forget"', refers to the often quoted phrase on Remembrance Sunday and is attributed to either the poem "Recessional" by Rudyard Kipling, or Laurence Binyon's "Ode of Remembrance".

All our anniversary stamps and associated philatelic items will be available from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK from 12th November, 2018.

Passchendaele 1917 Centenary Cover

The centenary of the First World War Battle of Passchendaele in 1917, is being commemorated today throughout Belgium, Great Britain, Canada and elsewhere in the Commonwealth.

The Prince of Wales said in his memorial speech at Tyne Cot Cemetery near Ypres in Belgium, "We remember it not only for the rain that fell, the mud that weighed down the living and swallowed the dead, but also for the courage and bravery of the men who fought here.”

In this spirit of commemoration the CILP has released a very limited number of commemorative covers and commemorative postcards. Both feature our 1914 B.E.F. commemorative stamp with a special hand-struck cachet.

Both issues will be available from August 2nd for purchase through Alpha Thematics on eBid UK (subject to availability).

Centenary of the 'Old Contemptibles' B.E.F. 1914

On 22 November, 2014, a single stamp was issued by the Canvey Island Local Post to commemorate the centenary of the British regular army or British Expeditionary Force (B.E.F.) in Belgium prior to November 22, 1914.

Nicknamed the "Old Contemptible" following a supposed comment about Britain's small army by the German Kaiser, the B.E.F. was almost destroyed trying to halt the German advance. The "Old Contemptible" who survived the war proudly named their post-war associations after the sobriquet.

Although this stamp pays specific tribute to the 1914 "Old Contemptible" of the original B.E.F., it also honours all soldiers who served in the British Army during the Great War.

The stamp features the designer's grandfather who was a regular soldier prior to 1910. He took part in the retreat from Mons and First Battle of Ypres in 1914. He served in the field for most of the Great War and was fortunate to return to England at the emd of the war.
