Emergency Mail Service Stamp Issued

On 23 April, 2020, the CILP will officially issue an 'Emergency Mail Service' stamp.

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 crises and its impact on UK Royal Mail services, the CILP decided it should schedule additional services for Canvey Island. These deliveries will be made within the restrictions of the UK government's social distancing guidance. Deliveries will be made by bicycle and on foot during permitted daily exercise periods.

The 'Emergency Mail Service' stamp (CLP010716S) was originally designed and printed in July 2016 in preparation for use during postal service disruption or civil emergency. Only 90 copies have been printed and of these only 79 remain for postal use and sale to collectors. Only 10 copies of this stamp have been previously made available to collectors as a 'Specimen' overprint in November 2016 (CLP181116S).

Stamps will be available on eBay UK and from our agent Alpha Stamps on eBid UK.
Mainland and international mail originating from the CILP or Alpha Stamps, will also bear the stamp until stocks are exhausted.

Keep safe, keep well, support the NHS!

Emergency Mail Stamp Back into Storage!

Having heard the news last month that the UK Royal Mail was about to face its first national postal strike in a decade at Christmas, I dusted off the yet-to-be-issued CILP Emergency Mail stamp in readiness!

CLP010716S
However, my hopes of finally issuing this stamp were dashed, when Royal Mail management won its legal battle this week to prevent the postal strike at the High Court and won an injunction.
Strike action may yet still take place even though this would be disruptive at Christmas time for the public. Until then, the CILP Emergency Mail stamp will have to wait another day and has been put back into storage!

Have You Got Your RAF Centenary Stamp?

Have You Got Yours?

On 1st April 2018, we released a very limited overprint of our 2010 RAF Hurricane stamp to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

Only 22 copies of the 2010 'Salute to the Few' Hurricane issue were overprinted in red 'RAF 1918-2018', and sold through Alpha Thematics on eBid UK.

Some of our regular collectors only buy outstanding CILP issues once or twice a year. If you still have a gap in your collection where the RAF Centenary overprint should be, get yours quickly!

Low Stock and High Demand

CILP stock of this stamp is now below 6 copies and Alpha Thematics have been forced to restrict sales to one stamp per transaction and modestly increase its price to better reflect the market for this item. This is to ensure a fair distribution to our regular collectors and to reduce the speculation of at least two multiple buyers of this and other issues recently.

Record Price on eBay Italy

On 27 August 2018, an auction of an RAF Centenary overprint on eBay Italy, was sold for the silly price of £20.99 (23.45 euros). This is a record price as far as we know and there were no shortage of bids for the item!

If only the buyer and bidders had searched the Internet for CILP, the buyer could have saved themselves a fortune and bidders could have got an inexpensive copy for their collection!

Value for Money

We are not against others making money from our products, but we are not in the game of maximising profit at the expense of our hard won collectors.

CILP produces faux postage at a sensible price that meets our production expenses. This enables us to continue to produce varied and interesting cinderella stamps and help support this website.

We appreciate our regular and occasional collectors and look forward to serving you all for a long time to come!

Don't hang about, get over to Alpha Thematics and get your copy today!

New Issue: QEII Life & Service

To commemorate HM Queen Elizabeth II accession to the throne on 6 February 1952, and to recognise The Queen's dedication to the service of the United Kingdom and Commonwealth, the CILP has issued a set of five se-tenant stamps on 6 February 2018.

Entitled, "Queen Elizabeth II - Life & Service", the stamps show four portraits from HM The Queen's life from 1928 to 2013. A fifth stamp bears her Armorial Banner, often referred to as the Royal Standard. Across the base of the stamps is a quote from HM The Queen's accession oath; "The things which I have here before promised, I will perform and keep."

Only 84 sets have been produced as a se-tenant strip with full perforations and gum. Each stamp measures approximately 31x31mm. A very limited edition of First Day Covers and FDI postcards have been produced (due to technical and aesthetic reasons the se-tenant strip has been broken to accommodate hand applied FDI cancellations).

This issue (subject to availability) can be obtained from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK

Happy Puddingmas Penguins!

On the 27th November the CILP released its first dedicated Christmas themed stamp. We have secured the use of an original cartoon, "Happy Puddingmas Penguins" by cartoonist Paul Munro, for our stamp.

The design shows four penguins all looking forward to their Christmas pudding. However,  one greedy fat penguin has beaten them to it! This cartoon is featured on Paul Munro's personal Xmas cards for 2017 and he has kindly allowed CILP royalty free use of the design

Only 75 stamps have been produced in horizontal format with full perforations and gum, each stamp measuring 44x25mm. No covers or FDI postcards have been produced for this stamp release.

Famous Public Houses Stamp Set

Canvey Island Local Post (CILP) released it's Famous Public Houses stamp issue on the 23rd October, 2017. It is a four horizontal stamp set featuring Canvey Island 'pubs' that have played a defining role in community life for many decades and in one case, centuries.

The 'pubs' featured in a stylised pencil sketch style are; the Haystack, the Admiral Jellicoe, the King Canute (prior to the 1953 flood known as the Red Cow), and the Lobster Smack. The latter was used by Charles Dickens as the Ship Inn in his 1861 novel Great Expectations. All the other pubs have their own stories and history, both good and bad.

With the imminent demolition and re-development of the Admiral Jellicoe and the closure of the King Canute (formerly Red Cow), it is poignant and timely that the CILP should release this long planned stamp set now.

Unfortunately, it was necessary to omit equally famous or well known pubs and drinking clubs from this issue, such as the old Oysterfleet, the Canvey Club (featured on a vinyl LP cover by R&B band Dr Feelgood), and younger establishments such as the Windjammer of the 1980s, and the Silver Jubilee from 1977. We hope to include these in a future stamp issue.

A total of 45 sets and six First Day Covers have been produced. Stamps and covers (subject to availability) available from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK

Recent Issues April - July 2016

Recent Stamp Issues April to July 2016

The CILP produced three new stamps and one commemorative card during the period April to July 2016. We are pleased to announce that two stamp issues and associated material is now available to collectors.

Due to technical issues the CILP has not released envelope style first day covers to accompany these stamps, only limited edition FDI postcards. We advise collectors not to delay in obtaining items to avoid disappointment due to our limited stock.

All stamps detailed here have been issued fully gummed and perforated. Actual sizes of stamps may differ to images shown.

23rd April: Shakespeare’s Death 400th Anniversary

The Shakespeare stamp commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of the bard, probably the greatest and most notable figure in the history of drama literature in the English speaking world. The stamp shows the bard himself against a ‘first folio’ of his collected works. A total of 75 stamps was issued and a limited edition of six ‘first day issue’ postcards.

17th June: HM The Queen Elizabeth II 90th Birthday

This stamp celebrates the official 90th birthday of HM The Queen, Elizabeth II, the longest reigning English monarch ever. This is an attractive stamp showing a montage of Queen Elizabeth against an antique drawing of Windsor Castle, with “ER” monogram and interlaced dates of her year of birth (1926), age (90) and actual celebration year (2016). A total of 75 stamps was issued and a limited edition of six ‘first day issue’ postcards.

1st July: Battle of the Somme 1916 Commemorative Card

This has been issued to commemorate the centenary of the Second Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916 (Battle of Albert). Undoubtedly, the bloodiest battle ever for the British Army, which tragically led to the deaths of 19,240 British and Commonwealth soldiers (from a total of 57,470 casualties) on the first day alone.

A limited edition of six commemorative cards was issued bearing three CILP ‘B.E.F’ stamps overprinted “1916” (two reverse and one obverse). The original stamp was first issued in 2014. A black circular cachet “Battle Somme 1916” and blue circular date stamp complete the cards.

A limited release of 34 ‘B.E.F.’ stamps overprinted “1916” have been produced for this commemoration. Sixteen mint copies are available for collectors with the other 18 being used on FDI cards.

Unissued: Emergency Mail Service Stamp

The CILP has made provision to expand its mail delivery service on Canvey Island and to the mainland in the event of disruption of normal mail services or for the duration of declared civil emergencies.

A stamp has been produced to cover this eventuality and will be issued as required. This stamp will not be available to collectors until an emergency arises and until then it remains locked away!

B-17 "Heavenly Body II" Flying Fortress Issue

B-17 "Heavenly Body II" Stamp

The CILP is pleased to announce the release of a single stamp design on 19 June, 2015, entitled “Heavenly Body II”.

It is a direct tribute to the aircrews of two B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 379th Bomb Group, 8th USAAF which collided in mid-air approaching Canvey Island whilst returning from a mission to destroy V-1 sites in France on 19 June, 1944. Indirectly it honours all USAAF aircrews operating from England during WWII.

© 2015 CILP
The stamp issue is named after the nickname of one of the aircraft, B-17 42-97942. The other B-17 involved was the un-named 44-6133. Eleven men died in the incident and seven survived, some of whom came ashore on Canvey Island.

The stamp features a B-17 on an airfield in England, showing the 1st Division, 8th USAAF yellow triangle tail marking. The 379th was an element of the 1st Division but the aircraft in the image is actually from another 1st Division element, the 525th Bomb Group.

The CILP has produced a limited edition 270 horizontal stamps measuring 59x20mm. All stamps are perforated and gummed.

First Day Cover and FDI Postcard

An associated limited edition of 12 First Day Covers has also been produced. Each cover bears a pair of stamps with hand-struck FDI cancel.  The cover measures 162x114mm and features the 8th USAAF patch and has a detailed card insert describing the incident.

Six 'First Day Issue' postcards were also produced using the Dutch Cottage Heritage Postcard #1. They bear a single stamp on the reverse with a hand-struck FDI cancellation.
